The Image Is Displayed Sideways or Upside Down

When you perform a scan with the ScanSnap, if the scanned image is displayed sideways or upside down, check the following:

Have you selected [Automatic] or [Automatic (by face detection)] for [Rotation] in the scan settings?

When the document type is [Documents], [Business Cards], or [Receipts], if [Automatic] has been selected for [Rotation] in the scan settings, scanned images are rotated automatically based on the character strings in a document.

When the document type is [Photos], if [Automatic (by face detection)] has been selected for [Rotation] in the scan settings, scanned images are rotated automatically in accordance with the way the face of a person in a photo is orientated.

If you want to scan documents without thinking about the way a document is rotated, select [Automatic] or [Automatic (by face detection)] for [Rotation] in the following procedure.

Did you scan a document in an orientation that is hard to determine?

If [Automatic] or [Automatic (by face detection)] has been selected for [Rotation], scanned images are rotated automatically.

However, images may not be rotated correctly and displayed sideways or upside down when you scan the following types of documents:

  • For documents, business cards, or receipts

The orientation of a document is determined based on the character strings in a document.

    • Documents with few characters in a font size between 8 and 12 pt.

    • Documents with many extremely large or small characters

    • Documents on which pitches between lines or characters are extremely narrow, or characters are overlapped

    • Documents with many characters contacting underlines or borders

    • Documents with many outlined or decorated characters

    • Documents with many photographs or figures and few characters

    • Documents with characters on a patterned background

    • Documents with characters printed in various directions such as drawings

    • Documents written using only capital letters

    • Documents with handwritten characters

    • Documents with faint characters

    • Documents with faded characters

  • For photos

Images are rotated in accordance with the way the face of a person in a photo is orientated.

If a photo is not of a person such as a landscape photo, images will not be rotated.

If you scan a document in an orientation that is hard to determine, follow the procedure below to change the setting so that the orientation of the images are not automatically corrected.
